Poinciana Day School is going GREEN!

Going "green" is more than just learning about the environment, playing outdoors daily, or tending to gardens - things that our Poinciana Day School students already engage in.

Poinciana Day School's new facility on Lyons Road is designed to be environmentally friendly and diminish the impact on our environment through concerted efforts to conserve water and energy, maximize natural light, and integrate the design with the surrounding landscape. Poinciana Day School's green efforts start from the initial architectural plans and will include the materials used to create the new facility to how it is maintained on a daily basis.

Research has shown that there is a direct correlation between where children learn and how well they learn. Green schools are more energy efficient, less costly to operate, environmentally safe, and healthier for children and staff. Experts say that greater environmental comfort and plenty of natural light can have a positive impact on student performance, including 20-25% gains in reading and math, as well as fewer health problems reported by students and adults alike.

Although we are not in the new facility yet, Poinciana Day School has already taken steps to become more "green."

The school has established a recycling program through the Student Council. Office paper, corrugated cardboard, plastic and aluminum cans are collected and recycled through the Solid Waste Authority. Electronics and ink cartridges are also recycled so that harmful chemicals stay out of our landfills.

The school is switching over to environmentally sensitive cleaning products. These products help keep harmful chemicals out of our children's environment. In addition, compact fluorescent light bulbs are replacing incandescent bulbs to decrease energy use.

For the 2008-09 school year, Poinciana Day School will start to go paperless. The weekly newsletter, which is normally distributed to all families and a 100 person mailing list, will instead be emailed to all families. This will save trees, postage and personnel time in copying and stuffing envelopes.

Another step in going paperless is in the evolution of the current school website. The website will not only be a promotional piece, but also a major communication link with current families. Current news will be posted as teachers begin to post work from their classes, timelines for upcoming projects, news to parents, and email communication with teachers for students and parents.

These are the first of many steps that Poinciana Day School has taken to become more environmentally sensitive. Each day brings more new steps with it as we teach our children to live in a more earth-friendly manner.
