In 1960, nationally renowned Montessori educator, Jean Bilohorka, founded Wee Wisdom Montessori Pre-school at Unity of the Palm Beaches on Flagler Drive in West Palm Beach. The school gradually expanded to include kindergarten through eighth grade, becoming known as Wee Wisdom Montessori/Flagler Unity School. In early 1991, Unity informed the parents that it would no longer be supporting the school and was planning to sell the classroom buildings. A small group of faculty and parents banded together and formed the school now known as Poinciana Day School. With approximately sixty students, Poinciana opened its doors in the fall of 1991 in two temporary locations.
Currently Poinciana Day School is located at 1340 Kenwood Road, West Palm Beach, with an adjacent annex. We currently have about 80 students, kindergarten through the eighth grade. As a non-profit school, a volunteer Board of Trustees, consisting of parents and community members, sets general policy. Our Head of School is in charge of day-to-day operations, including curriculum.
